How is iron the most common element?
(3 years, 5 months ago)

Bllues
Hb39: To answer your question iron is the most common element by mass on the planet because, well, there is more of it than any other element.
(3 years, 5 months ago)

Mister Tom
True... but not the most common element in the crust (Aluminium). Or in the universe ( Hydrogen). Or in humans (Oxygen by mass, hydrogen by number). I'll get my coat.

H
Maybe most common metal? Or of earth's crust/core? Please cite source re: Fe is most common element. There's a mistake there somewhere.
Otherwise - GREAT GRID! :)

Iron is not the most common element.

What does spotty dog mean in the context of wood?

Washington's teeth weren't made of wood. They were made of the teeth of dead soldiers and slaves' teeth, according to Ron Chernow's "Washington: A Life".

Calum.
Too contrived and not to my taste. And if GW's teeth were not wooden, then the clue doesn't work.

I'm not sure how iron is "our most common element"

Loved it. Knew it quickly but struggled on my complete lack of knowledge of knowing Argentum and Atomic Number 50....

Bloke
Completely discounted iron as the answer to "our most common element". Got annoyed and looked it up, and iron is more abundant on earth than any other element (with H and He making up 98% of the matter in the universe I hadn't considered it particularly abundant)

Great little grid! Some of the references were impossible for me though, spotty dog and wheelchair detective. And "The Real Tonto" was maybe a little too niche. Great overall :)

Nice themed grid. Thanks. George Washington’s teeth were wooden by legend even if it’s doubtful, but is there space to add the word legendary or allegedly?

Bit too obscure!

Nice wall, not too difficult once you got the theme. I liked the spotty dog clue, being British and because of my age......
